City school review: It's past time
Alderman Ted Gatsas won't be sworn in as Manchester's next mayor until January and already he has initiated a review of the city's schools. That's good news because too much time has been wasted waiting for city officials to reform the school system.

Gatsas wants to discuss changing the grade ranges of elementary, middle and high schools, sending all Hooksett students to West High, giving Hooksett a voice on school policy and redrawing the districts.

Whether the Gatsas proposals emerge as the final changes or something better is developed in the process, it is encouraging that the mayor-elect recognizes the need to act immediately.

The city schools have been struggling with districting, discipline and educational issues for years. Gatsas saw that attempts to fix the system piecemeal didn't work. His call for a major overhaul is the right move. If he and school officials are equally open to new ideas, this might finally produce the improvements city parents have waited so long to see.
