| January 7th, 2010 Go-Go Gatsas: Mayor wastes no time Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas was inaugurated Tuesday, and then quickly announced that aldermen and school board members would meet every week for the next three months to complete the city budget by the end of March. Gatsas didn't have to hold weeks' worth of discussions with board members about his new schedule because he held those discussions before taking office. The first aldermanic budget meeting will take place eight days after Gatsas' inauguration. He isn't hitting the ground running; he's flying right over it. Some might see a parallel between Gatsas and President Obama. Both started out in a big hurry to get things done. But unlike the President, the mayor isn't stiff-arming the opposition and rushing to ram a preconceived agenda down the people's throats. He's hurrying to hold discussions. That's a big difference. This year's city budget will be a tough one. Money is tighter than usual; and money is always tight. Gatsas is wise to start the process early. His schedule provides the best chance for elected officials to prioritize city and school spending and avoid ill-conceived improvisations slipped in at the last minute. Does this mean we are going to see a tax cut? Not necessarily. But starting early increases the odds that the budget will get the thorough review it deserves, which increases the odds that efficiencies and savings can be found. - Editorial in The Union Leader, January 7, 2010 Back To News |
