| July 6th, 2009 Gatsas raises, spends, listens When former state Sen. Bobby Stephen announced he was running for mayor, he said he hoped fellow candidates would come together and abide by some kind of spending cap. Fat chance: opponent Ted Gatsas, already working hard for the job, raised a cool $100,000 at his first fundraiser, held on Monday, June 29 at the Derryfield Country Club. About 250 people were on hand for the Gatsas fundraiser, the first of several events scheduled for the coming weeks. "People were lined up to show their support for Ted last night. This is the level of support you get when you have a great candidate," said Finance Committee Member Siobhan Tautkus in prepared statement. It's estimated that it takes $200,000 to $300,000 to run for mayor in Manchester, so Gatsas is off to a fast start. The candidate isn't just raising money; he's also spending it, in part on a citywide survey mailed out in late June (complete with postage-paid envelope) to get input from residents on issues ranging from education to crime. If you didn't get one, check it out online at www.tedgatsas.com/1632-39467_ survey.pdf . The survey is part of a Gatsas "Listening Tour" that was described like this in a campaign press release: "Pledging to utilize all available means of communicating with residents, the survey is an important component of the Listening Tour that Gatsas has embarked upon. In addition to the survey, Gatsas has been riding on the MTA bus system, going door to door, participating in public events, visiting businesses, and making phone calls.
