| September 1st, 2009 PR: Gatsas Presses Stephen On False Claim That He Has Never Raised Taxes Highlights the Striking Difference Between His Record and His Campaign Claims September 1, 2009, Manchester, NH – Ted Gatsas candidate for Mayor, pointed out the false claim that his opponent Bobby Stephen has been making in debates, his mail pieces and around the city with voters. Gatsas pointed out the inconsistency at this morning’s debate hosted by WGIR, MCAM and the Manchester Express. One of Stephen’s mailers claims that he has “never voted to raise taxes” while in the State Senate. His record shows something quite different. In just one vote he supported an increase in the Business Profits Tax and the doubling of the Real Estate Transfer Tax. Stephen claimed that he “didn’t remember.” Gatsas said, “I just don’t know how Bobby Stephen can continue to tell the voters with a straight face that he’s never voted to increase taxes when he clearly has and now he wants you to believe that he won’t raise taxes as mayor without telling people how he is going to do it.” In all three debates, Stephen criticized the majority of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen for passing a bipartisan budget in June. His criticism has consistently come without offering any specifics on what he would have cut out of the budget. Instead Stephen has shared rosy thoughts around economic development being the single answer to the economic challenges the city is facing. “I’ve spent my career working towards viable solutions rather then playing politics. Claiming to never have raised taxes and making the assertion that you never will in order to win votes is the problem with politics. People lose trust in politician and the political system when politics come before solutions,” said Gatsas. - END - Back To News |
