POLITICAL Standing for September 11, 2009
Every week Political Standing tracks who is up or down in New Hampshire politics

UP

Ted Gatsas -- The state Senator is likely on his way to getting the top spot on Tuesday's Manchester Mayoral primary. His fund-raiser this week with hundreds attending - even Frank Giunta! - proves again that he is doing things his opponents simply cannot.

Mark Roy: The close of the election season means he gets to do what he does best: debate. But this is still about getting out the vote in an environment of apathy.

Jeanne Shaheen: She returned to Washington this week and is quickly summoned to the White House on health care. More interestingly is the fact she went though all of August without a single person asking why she didn't hold a town hall meeting.

DOWN

Bobby Stephen: In August it seemed that Mark Roy had handed the second primary spot and now Stephen is handing it back to Roy. Why Stephen insists on talking about the spending cap before this primary is beyond anyone except the Stephen clan. Instead of convincing the Democratic base he is the only one who can beat Gatsas, he is convincing them he is not their guy at all. Who knows who will make it through the primary, but this should have been over weeks ago.

House Democratic Leadership: Are Susan Almy and Terie Norelli really surprised there were so many cameras and reporters following them this week? Really? When a person of power admits they really want an income tax, is in the position to push for an income tax, and holds hearings about the income tax it is news. Smile for the cameras, particularly those small ones recording campaign commercials for next year.

Kelly Ayotte: Ayotte actually got an up arrow recently and things seemed to be turning around. This week The Laconia Citizen story was odd, but so were those quotes in Granite Status.
